Is Asphalt Rolled Roofing Really Worth The Try?

Asphalt rolled roofing is a great option if you’re looking for a cheap and easy-to-install roofing material. This is commonly used on residential and industrial roofing applications as a way of protecting roofs from moisture and harmful weather elements. Although there are certain drawbacks, asphalt rolled roofing still offer benefits that you can take advantage.

Commonly used as a roof underlayment, asphalt rolled roofing is quite similar to asphalt shingles in terms of the materials used in making it. It’s usually manufactured as a rolled sheet material, either felt or fiberglass, that’s covered with blackish or brownish asphalt and an inert granular stone aggregate. You can usually purchase this in rolled sheets that are available in 91 centimeters (35.8 inches) by 10 meters (32.8 feet) measurements.

Another good feature with this roofing material is that it’s considered as a single-ply membrane. It means that you only need to use one layer of rolled roofing material instead of several sheets. It’s also available in different options: bitumen, coated felt, asphalt-saturated felt, and topping roofing materials.

Since its lightweight, this type of roofing is quite inexpensive and takes no time to install. It is ideally installed on flat (2:12) or low slope (2:12-4:12) roofs. The first layer of asphalt rolled sheet is laid at the bottom, alongside the gutter, then going up while each new roll overlaps each other. This is fixed into position using an adhesive, torch on (underside type), or nailed in place (at the upper edge of the sheet).

Although the purchase price is quite affordable, this roofing material is not built to last that long if you compare it with other types. The expected lifespan of standard asphalt rolled roof material is roughly around 5 years to 15 years. It doesn’t stand too well against constant temperature changes, which causes it to repeatedly contract and expand. This would result to cracking and breaking down of the asphalt material.

Any roofing material, if not installed correctly, would still end up deteriorated before its expected lifespan. That is why you should always hire the best roofing contractor in your area. You can ask your relatives or friends for contractors they particularly like – preferably those that have experiences in installing asphalt rolled roof materials. The internet is also a good place to find these qualified contractors. Customer reviews and ratings will serve as your guide in evaluating the best roofing company for the job.

If compared with other roofing types, this is definitely the easiest to install and one of the most affordable materials. It is perfect for all homeowners who are on a tight budget and do not mind the short life expectancy of an asphalt rolled roofing (it’s still worth the try).
